PALATINE, Ill. - The Harper College women's basketball team led College of DuPage as late as 12 minutes into the game, but the Hawks couldn't overcome a 15-0 Lady Chaparrals run to end the first half in a 69-33 defeat.
Monica Hinderer (Arlington Heights, Ill., The Willows Academy) led the Hawks with 15 points and eight rebounds while Rachel Payne (Wheeling, Ill., Schaumburg Christian Academy) added seven points and five steals.
Harper (8-12, 3-8) scored the first two baskets of the game as Hinderer scored on a post-up on the opening possession and Tiffany Jost (Hoffman Estates, Ill., Schaumburg) followed with a jump shot. Payne's rebound and putback got the Hawks back on top at 6-4. Her steal and uncontested layup preceded Hinderer's drive to the basket with 9:39 left that gave Harper their biggest lead of the evening at 10-6.
After Hinderer's free throw with 5:39 left in the first half, DuPage (18-9, 9-2) closed the half on a 15-0 run to claim a 28-13 advantage at intermission. And that run continued after the break as DuPage came out on an 11-2 run with Harper's only field goal a bank shot from Jayna Rowland (Arlington Heights, Ill., Christian Liberty Academy).
Rowland added two more jumpers in the second half and finished with seven points and six rebounds. Donna Koerber led DuPage with 16 points and 14 rebounds while Jazmin Little had 12 points, including three 3-pointers.
Harper will hit the road on Saturday to face Milwaukee Area Technical College. Tipoff is slated for noon.
